I believe my journey to joining the Schuitema Group, like many others in my life, started years before I knew God’s plans.

I say that because a deep resonance connects me to its philosophy of giving but in a way that is both imprinted and worthwhile. I have spent the last two decades of my life looking for my career’s central meaning, if there were any. That is not to suggest that I have been lost (well, at least not always). I have learnt, grown and built a good CV, but a question – one that is daunting – has gnawed at me over the years: so, what does it all mean? I believe this question is an iteration (if not an irritation) to which many can relate.

Learning from Mum – my beloved and now departed – I have had to build from the ground up. The hard work and its yields have sometimes felt misplaced in their solitude. But it has almost always been my case that God reveals each of His pieces’ purpose retrospectively. He is, after all, the God. In 2004, a South African bank executive crossed a R20 000-cheque in my name to help with tuition. Years later, I worked as a waiter in South Africa despite having a Rhodes University degree. At the restaurants, I met people who lifted me onto a flight’s next step. My story became a book  – The Educated Waiter –  that I wrote out of both frustration and joy. Then Professor X at Wits University read it and offered me a scholarship to study for a master’s degree.

I could tell a hundred stories like these, but I will pick one more from 2024 when I met someone at a lunch within South Africa’s L&D community.

We instantly connected and her benevolence led me to Maryam, Assad and Etsko. The rest is a history in which I am counted among a community of givers. Studying the Care & Growth model has been reflective as much as it has enabled me to connect my life’s dots. It now occurs to me that God’s grace and everything I have learnt have led me this place. I proclaim this not just as a Catholic, but a son whom His provision continues to discipline. The Schuitema Group’s philosophy resonates with me because its core message is authentic and veritable. I consider my ability to impart it to be a gift because it requires me to merge my authentic self with it.

Care & Growth culminates in a single story despite the disparity that exists between ours.

It empowers me and feels like it is completing my life’s ever morphing circle. It reshapes me and those to whom I gift it. It is as complex as it enables me to simplify it for them. It does feel like I have always known it.
