The fruit of the apple tree is visible. It is also measurable. It can be counted, weighed, tasted, compared and reported.

In business, this fruit shows up as sales, profit, quality, productivity, customer satisfaction, safety, retention and delivery.

That is why leaders naturally look at performance first. It is the easiest part of the tree to see. But fruit is never created at the branch.

A branch may carry the fruit. It may display the fruit. It may even make the fruit visible to the world. But the branch is not the source. The fruit is grown from what lies beneath.

The same is true in leadership.

Many organisations try to improve performance by working only at branch level. They push harder. They demand more. They create more targets, more dashboards, more reports, more pressure and more meetings. They inspect the fruit more often and then wonder why the tree does not become healthier…
