When you cannot promise certainty, what can you promise?

As a leader in times of uncertainty you can promise to enable people to be strong not weak and you can deliver care and growth.

Strong people can stand and sometimes even overcome challenges. Weak people wane in even the most benign circumstances.

Leaders make their people strong firstly by shifting their attention from the past/present to the future. When people are stuck in the past/present they develop a victim mentality. When focus shifts to the future, steps can be taken towards it.

Secondly, leaders effect an intent shift from being here to get to being here to give. When people focus on the give they focus on what they have control over.

Finally, they shift their people away from blame to taking accountability. Accountable people are strong, not weak.

In times of uncertainty, leaders, unlike managers, invest in the care and growth of their people. Care means getting to know them better as human beings not human resources, really listening to them and their concerns, and showing genuine care for their personal circumstances.

In addition, leaders empower their people by devolving decision-making authority and increasing their autonomy.

During the Covid pandemic, trust in management at a 300-year-old dockyard increased significantly. This was because people who lived alone were called by their immediate manager not to check up on their productivity but just to find out how they were coping. A lot of red tape was done away with. Also, since most managers worked from home, those in the dockyard were free to make their own decisions and, as a result, grew exponentially.
